Book - WHY? WHY NOT?

80 Years of Art & Design in Pix & Prose, Juxtaposed.

Lifelines & landscapes from the SF Art Institute, nightclub dancing in NY, to SF's Art in Cinema & the Hollywood movie scene. 1945 to 1955 was spent studying graphic design in Basel, Switzerland, and then onto a SF design office & painting Supergraphics at The Sea Ranch in the early 60's. Studying architecture at UCB in 1967, to work in Berlin, Barcelona, Paris, NY & SF.

After all this, Barbara became obsessed with 81/2”x11” sheets of white paper. She typed lines, drew lines and created letterforms that lined up into words.

"Words lined up into straight lines. Straight lines, one above another, lined up into columns & stories. Each line & liaison led to the next & related to the rest. I cut-&-paste a lot on more sheets of 81/2”x11” paper and became a knotty Y-NOT-KNOT lady looking on from across the book's binding. Glued, I looked for secrets in white shapes, the precious nothing of wide margins, the white space no one notices between the lines and lies, behind the scenes & in my life."

This is the 80-year career of Barbara Stauffacher Solomon.

Barbara Stauffacher Solomon’s latest book made by hand in her San Franciscan studio. The book’s form is similar to that of her UTOPIA MYOPIA: PLAYS ON A PAGE, wherein lines of images play with lines of words & each drawing is a one-page play with scenery & 5 acts of dialogue.

Architects & landscape architects will enjoy seeing the layout of the garden maze ground plan high rising vertically, one story over another, casting an amazed Mazy, maiden & maid, into playing the games that she plays.

[36 Plays On A PAGE]

A novel novel.
A diary.
A high-flying history.

Utopia Myopia is an academic adult comic book with visions of utopia, dystopia & myopia. Illusions, confusions & conclusions play out over 36 plays. The setting for each play is a piece of paper 81/2”x11”. Characters are listed. Scenes & characters are drawn on the top half of the page, while five columns of type in a newspaper style are set below. The dialogue is kept minimal. A shorthand determined by the number of letterforms per line. Utopia Myopia is a text-message for today's limited attention spans. A work of art in its own right.

"Apple trees & bobby pins debate things. A CNN app lets Anderson Cooper interview Wittgenstein on Cloud 9, a proud cloud explains letterforms, god DOG & work. WHY discourse, of course & Giotto ANGELS are finally free to possess legs and high-heels in their City of Angeles palm trees. Disagree re. architectural theory, but agree with the glitzy glass lady-shaped high-rise spanning Sunset Boulevard, that heaven is achieved in Utopia Made in Hollywood."
